Great set of Photoshop Actions for @Instagram filters

dbox:

I recently did a google search to see if anyone had “converted” instagram filters to photoshop actions. After not finding any results, I decided to see if I could do it myself. I didn’t get a 100% exact match, but it’s pretty close.

Im starting with “Nashville” then will add more soon.

Software devs want to create applications that work well while designers care about appearances!

The main problem these days is that so-called “designers” are calling many of the shots, rather than actual software developers. This is a pretty radical departure from the past few decades, where we’ve seen it mostly be the opposite situation. Software developers would make the decisions, but would occasionally enlist the help of graphics and UI designers to tweak the UI’s appearance or for suggestions about improving the UI’s usability. These days, however, we’re seeing the “designers” deciding how UIs, and even the software as a whole, are to behave, from beginning to end. The software developer is there to merely implement whatever the “designer” wants, without any ability or power to make decisions themselves. The problem arises because software developers and “designers” have very different focuses. Software developers want to create applications that work well, and are effective to use, even if they might not be very pretty. “Designers” tend to only care about appearances, even if the application isn’t very usable. And they only keep themselves relevant by changing, often needlessly, the appearance of the application or web site on a frequent basis.

Now this is a great way to begin the week and why I love the internet. I think calling the author stupid would be an insult to stupidity itself.

Lytro is a disruptive technology that aims to make “focusing” your camera a thing of past. Uses light field technology that apparently has been around since the 90s.

I am curious though, how does this affect the size of the photo. Also strange is the company’s decision to enter the camera manufacturing market than license the technology.

Here is a sample. Click anywhere in the photograph to change focus:

iCloud, Internet and the Web

The post by @joshuatopolsky leaves a lot to be contradicted. But I guess the point that forced me to write this post was the following:

… but the company seems to have forgotten the one big piece he talks about towards the end — the web front-end for these services. Instead of pulling up the stakes here, Apple should be doubling down. The internet is not just going to go away.

Please note the following:

  • The Web and the Internet and are not one and the same. Do not use them in the same breath and interchangeably as if they are.
  • Apple’s canvas is the screen/device while Google’s is the Browser (Web)
  • Apple would want every user to have an iPhone, iPad and Macs. Not giving a web front end is a smart move to augment that. Not saying a good move, but smart for sure.
  • Apple has never once formally said these features are being cut off or that they are NOT going to build a web version.

When I need to access music with my Rdio account, I can do it from a plain old web browser, or an Android, iOS, or even BlackBerry application — and the ability to shift between those portals is incredibly powerful.

Only Apple is not in the business of selling softwares, at least that is not their prime focus.

there is no photo sharing service for iOS or the Mac which is as flexible or accessible as Flickr

Instagram. Growing stronger as we discuss.

Why not add cloud-based Pages and Numbers. Give us group editing, bring all those new Mail features online.

All of the above can be brought in existing products without building a web front end.
